A new Prime Minister. The same mandate.
This June, 1.6 million people across the UK came together during Great Big Green Week - the UK’s biggest-ever moment for climate and nature. Now, within days of taking office, incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham and his team will face their first big choice on climate and nature. He needs to hear from us - loudly, and now.
What’s happening?
Reports suggest that within days of taking office, new Prime Minister Andy Burnham could back new North Sea oil and gas drilling - including the approval of the Rosebank oil field. Nothing has been confirmed - which is why now is the moment to speak up.
This would not be a minor decision, if it goes ahead. It would lock in more fossil fuel extraction at exactly the moment the science, the public, and the economics all point the other way - and it risks setting the tone for how climate and nature are treated under the new government.
But the mandate for a different path has never been clearer.
This Great Big Green Week, 1.6 million people across the UK took action for their communities, for nature and for the climate. They came together to protect the natural world they love and showed politicians and decision makers that people across the UK want positive change. And last summer 5,000 people signed up to meet their MPs at the Act Now, Change Forever Mass Lobby, speaking to over 200 MPs to show that protecting people, climate and nature isn't a fringe issue - it's a shared priority across regions and political divides.

That support isn't going anywhere. As Andy Burnham and his new team take office, it's vital they hear that - loudly, and now.
We've joined Uplift, Green Alliance, Greenpeace, the WI, Friends of the Earth, the Marine Conservation Society and Climate Outreach and more in writing to Andy Burnham urging him to reject new North Sea licensing and back the real solutions to energy security and affordability: renewables, home insulation, and a proper transition for oil and gas workers and communities.
