Great Big Green Week: Small Actions, Big Difference

This Great Big Green Week, we're sharing perspectives from across The Climate Coalition on what it means to come together for good. Here, Patrick Begg, Nature, Climate and Strategic Partnerships Director at the National Trust, reflects on why small actions matter - and how they add up.

When people think about climate change, it's easy to assume the biggest solutions lie elsewhere – with governments, businesses or new technologies.

Those things are important. But so is the role each of us can play.

Small actions, multiplied

Great Big Green Week is a reminder that positive change often starts close to home. It is an opportunity to celebrate the actions already being taken by communities across the country and to recognise that individual choices, when multiplied by millions of people, can have a powerful impact.

The good news is that many climate-friendly actions also make our lives healthier, more connected and more resilient. Walking or cycling instead of driving short journeys, reducing food waste, improving home energy efficiency, supporting local nature projects or choosing products that last longer can all help reduce environmental impacts while bringing wider benefits.

Just as importantly, these actions influence others. When neighbours see a successful community garden, when friends hear about a home energy improvement, or when a local group comes together to restore a habitat, ideas spread and confidence grows.

Nature and climate: two sides of the same story

At the National Trust, we see every day how closely climate and nature are linked. Healthy woodlands, restored peatlands, rivers that flow naturally and less intensive farming all help tackle climate change while providing homes for wildlife and places for people to enjoy. Protecting and restoring nature is one of the most effective ways we can build a more resilient future.

Change is built together

That future won't be created by a single breakthrough or one grand decision. It will be shaped by countless actions taken by individuals, communities, organisations and governments working towards a common goal.

Great Big Green Week is not about asking people to be perfect. It is about encouraging people to take the next step, however large or small that may be.

Because when people come together around practical action, change becomes possible. And when enough people act, change becomes inevitable.

Every action matters. Every conversation helps. Every step forward is part of building a healthier, greener future for nature, climate and people.

Great Big Green Week runs from 6–14 June. Find an event near you, or add your own to the map.
